The Challenger Disaster

Jan 28, 2016 — The U.S. shuttle orbiter Challenger blew apart some 73 seconds after lifting off from Cape Canaveral, Florida in 1986, killing all seven astronauts on board.

The space shuttle was engulfed in a cloud of fire just 73 seconds after liftoff, at an altitude of some 46,000 feet (14,000 meters).

The five astronauts and two payload specialists that made up the STS 51-L crew aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in January of 1986. Crew members are  astronauts Michael J. Smith, Francis R. (Dick) Scobee and Ronald E. McNair; and Ellison S. Onizuka, Sharon Christa McAuliffe, Gregory Jarvis and Judith A. Resnik.
